About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Stationary Engineer / Boiler Operator to join our facilities team. This role operates and maintains steam plant equipment such as gas fired steam boilers, steam to steam boilers, electric boilers, air compressors, generators, motors, and associated equipment to provide utilities such as electric, heating/cooling systems, domestic water, sewer/storm water systems for buildings.
Key Responsibilities- Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
- Records data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operations, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases
- Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment.
- Visually inspected equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
- Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components.
- Oils and lubricates equipment.
- Performs water titration tests and adds chemical additives, such as water softener, into treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and to clean boiler lines.
- Records operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operator's logbook.
- Accomplishes periodic inspections, recurring maintenance requirements and associated documentation as assigned. Maintains systems to conform to written guidance and applicable changes.
- Responds to emergency and urgent after-hours service calls.
- Works job assignments, research and requisitions materials, and prepares necessary documents and reports.
- Requires working scheduled and unscheduled overtime work including areas other than respective skilled trade.
- All appropriate safety practices for working with hand and power tools.
- Electrical, substations, refrigeration, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, ventilating systems, safe operation, and repairs.
- OSHA safety rules, including lock out tag out.
- Ability to:
- Troubleshoot, repair, regulate, and control electrical, hydronic, refrigeration, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems, and portable equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge to safely work in a medium-high voltage substation.
- Accurately determine time and materials required for a job.
- Fabricate items, using hand and power tools.
- Coordinate and work with other staff members to achieve project deadlines.
- Read and comprehend schematics, blueprints, and shop drawings.
- Communicate verbally and in writing.
- Use hand and power tools in a safe manner.
- Identify and resolve failures/alarms related to critical building equipment.
- Capable in Microsoft Office to communicate via email, maintain plant logs, obtain information regarding operation/maintenance of facility, review training materials, etc.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and three (3) years' experience in a healthcare or similar regulated industrial setting as a Stationary Engineer/Boiler Operator and, any combination of education and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, is qualifying.
- Knowledgeable in industrial HVAC systems and gas fired boilers with emphasis on troubleshooting and repairs of electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical control devices.
- Knowledgeable in direct expansion, chilled and heated water systems, including but not limited to chillers of any size, boilers up to 5 MMBTU/hr., hydronic hot/cold water distribution systems, cooling towers, and their controls and components
- A.S. degree in Mechanical Electrical Technology (MET) or Equivalent or
- Completion of MECH Certification or
- Completion of an accredited Apprenticeship program for Operating Engineer or
- Documented Military Journeyman level or higher for respective trade(s) and
- Engineers License
- Qualified High-Pressure Boiler Operator
- Valid Driver's License and insurable driving record
Preferred Certifications:
- BAS Training/Certification
- Building Operator Certification (BOC)
- NFPA 70 and 70E
- Familiarity with NFPA, NEC, TJC, OSHA, and applicable codes
- Ability to lift up to 10 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Frequent use of hands, arms, and communication skills.
- Occasional standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and crawling.
